Artemis Fowl gets so much character development over the course of this series. Unfortunately, he's really the only character that has any sort of arc. The rest of the cast, including the villains, feel like you could have put this novel at the beginning of the series, and it would have been fine. Which is quite the letdown. I think that Colfer is incredibly creative, and there are definitely some cool parts in this novel, but other times it's too much and takes away from reading it in ANY serious capacity. Opal is honestly a super shallow villain, and, unfortunately, she is the main one for the series. I don't like the big twist at the end of the novel either. I think it would have been incredibly powerful to have a certain event be final. But Colfer decided to go for the safe ending instead. Guess I can't blame him.

This is a nostalgic series, and if I had read it all the way through in middle school or elementary school when it was intended to be read, I probably would have enjoyed it more. I don't think it holds up reading as an adult overall.
